Description: I have for sale the George Peabody Award medal that was struck at the United States Mint. The medal is silver, it is 2 1/2 inches in diameter and looks to be in uncirculated condition, but if not, its very close to uncirculated. The medalist was Henry Mitchell. The dies were made outside the mint but the medals were struck at the mint. In the Julian catalog this medal is listed as SC-31. The obverse at the rim reads GEORGE PEABODY - BORN 18 FEB. 1795.-DIED 4 NOV. 1869. In the center it shows the bust of Peabody. On the reverse at the rim it reads "EDUCATION - A DEBT DUE FROM PRESENT TO FUTURE GENERATIONS". In the center around the engraving it reads THE TRUSTEES OF THE PEABODY EDUCATION FUND and then engraved FOR - MARTHA PAULINE GASH - OF THE SENIOR CLASS - IN THE NORMAL COLLEGE - AT NASHVILLE, TENN. - FOR - DISTINGUISHED - EXCELLENCE - MAY 31, 1882. On the engraving it has two extra words. It has In The in small letters above Normal College. It looks like the engraver could not make up his mind as how to continue. Sorry about the poor pictures of the engraving, I don't have the best camera. I believe the Normal College was founded in 1875 and went to 1889 and I think eventually it became the George Peabody College for Teachers? Please see more in my EBAY STORE at TE Collectables.
