Description: GEORGE III SILVER CREAM JUG. c.1785. POSSIBLY JOSEPH HICKS, EXETER. This is a fine Georgian Solid Silver Cream Jug dating to c.1785. Hallmarked but difficult to name the the silversmith and assay office. High loop handle, the circular foot standing on a loaded square base. Beaded edge around the top rim and extensive bright cut engraving around the body. Apparently gilded to the inside but might be light tarnish as we have not cleaned the item. Dimensions: Height to top of handle - 14.5 cm. (5.7 inch.). Height of spout - 11.5 cm. (4.5 inch.). Max. distance spout across to handle - 10.0 cm. (3.9 inch.). Square Base - 5.0 x 5.0 cm. (2.0 x 2.0 inch.). Weight: 359 grams. (Please note that this weight includes the weighted non-silver in the base). Marks: Markings including the Lion Passant which is in good condition are on the body below the rim and near the handle. Other markings are difficult to make out. There appears to be all or part of the silversmith's mark which looks like 'J H' in 'fancy' script. This could possibly be the mark of the Exeter silversmith Joseph Hicks albeit he is most well known for his prolific production of sugar tongs. The J H mark could be 'J A'. We cannot accurately determine a Date Letter albeit there could be the upper part of an 'I' or 'l'. Sorry we cannot be more helpful. Please look at the close-up photos as this might help those more knowledgeable to further identification. Condition: Excellent. Age wear throughout particularly to the 'identity' marks. No apparent repair or restoration.
