He so disliked practicing law that he gave up that career after only two years and enrolled in art school, becoming recognized for his skill in portraiture. He became interested in preserving the experiences and ways of life of the American Indians, and he subsequently made five trips across the United States to paint what he saw in American Indian culture, even as white settlers were pressing inexorably across the continent. He was also a collector of Native American artifacts, and he used these as reference materials in his artworks, which he gathered and published in folios.
