Description: DUTTON, C.E. Report on the Geology of the High Plateaus of Utah, Washington: U.S. Government Printing Office, 1880. Quarto, pp. xxxii, 307, 11 heliotype plates, 2 folding maps but lacking the atlas folio, original brown cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. The plates are not in numerical order. Dutton, an associate of John Wesley Powell, was one of the leading geologists of his era, and energetic in the field, covering 12,000 square miles with his Utah study. Wikipedia: "Dutton had a distinctive flair for literary description, and is best remembered today for his colorful (and sometimes flamboyant) descriptions. ... 'Dutton first taught the world to look at that country and see it as it was.' -- Wallace Stegner, Beyond the Hundredth Meridian." Julia van Haaften, the New York Public Library photo curator for many years, deduces in NYPL Bulletin 80 that the photos were taken by John Hillers and/or William Henry Jackson, but there is no absolute statement of that by Dutton. See NYPL Bull. 80, p. 396. Condition of this book Boards worn, backstrip held in place only by tape. Leaves clean but plates dampstained at edges.
