In this southern most territory of British-Egypt, bordering several countries, including Belgian Congo and French Equatorial Africa, the author observed and lived among several native tribes (and also British civil servants). He describes their customs and social behavior. Before publication, he checked his data with the writings of experts and at museums. His narrative also has stories of animals, some of which were tamed. His writing is frank, entertaining, and humorous. (Wyndham was a painter, printmaker, writer, and illustrator. He studied art under Harold Speed and Wyndham Lewis and was noted for his landscapes. He was father of the author Joan Wyndham.)
