Commissioned as a second lieutenant, Sedgwick embarked upon a lifelong career in the army. Upon the outbreak of the American Civil War, Sedgwick's many years of proven ability were badly needed by the Union. Rapidly promoted as the war continued, he became a major general. At the height of his fame and reputation, Sedgwick was killed in action near Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, in May 1864. This book tells the complete story of this remarkable general.
