Born Allan George See, his father who worked as a gas station attendant died when Gavin was fourteen. He studied Drama at Ithaca College and following graduation, he served with the United States Air Force. After working at Radio City Music Hall as an usher and elevator operation, he broke into television as an actor on the series "The Walter Winchell File" in 1957. During this period, he made his motion picture debut with a minor role in the film "The True Story of Lynn Stuart" (1958) and would go on to roles of substance in the pictures "I Want to Live!" with Susan Hayward (1958), "Pork Chop Hill" with Gregory Peck (1959), "Operation Petticoat" with Cary Grant & Tony Curtis (1959), "The Sand Pebbles" with Steve McQueen (1966), "The Party" with Peter Sellers (1968) and "Kelly's Heroes" (1969). Other television credits include "The Untouchables," "Perry Mason" and "Hogan's Heroes," and many more.
