Description: The disc is in fantastic condition, the cardboard sleeve, however, has a bit of shelfwear, only seen at certain angles. This is reflected in the price . This is a stunning recording, the drums and the percussion are amongst the best I have heard. They are not lost in the mix or rendered down to a “mush”. They are powerful and clear. Each element has its own distinct sound and quality. The sound stage is massive, wide and deep. The music and the volume ebbs and flows. This recording has perfectly captured the vibrancy of the performance. I have not set out to write reviews of the music content as “beauty is in the ears of the listener”. These reviews are about the quality (or not) of the recorded sound. To read about how the reviews are done please see my profile. • Clarity – good, transparent open • Channel separation – very good, distinctive placement of instruments using the left and right channels • Channel balance – excellent the instruments are well located and there is a very good centre stereo image • Sound Stage – this recording has a fabulous sound stage which is very wide and deep. There is a realistic feeling of being there with this recordings exceptional sound stage • Distortion – non audible • Compression – good dynamic and frequency range, the music and volume ebbs and flows. The recording is not overly loud and does not sound overly limited or compressed. There is good vibrancy. • Atmosphere – the superb sound stage gives this recording a real sense of being there. It is both open and spacious yet is intimate and detailed. • Bass – low frequencies – the bass on this recording is exceptional, not because it is deep and powerful but for the fact that all the bass elements are audible, the bass guitar is well defined and clearly audible. It is the drums and percussion that are the stars here. No matter how complex the music each part of the drum kit is audible and has its own distinctive sound, not a general background “mush”. The sound of the drum kit is entrancing, it is also rare to find a recording where the drums have been recorded so well. • Treble – high frequencies – the mid range and percussion is simply outstanding, just so clear and detailed without being cold and clinical. The horns soar and wail, the sax sound is outstanding, so clear and detailed. The volume ebbs and flows whilst the detail is retained. The guitar is gently sprinkled across the other instruments adding delicacy and a light touch. • Vocals – where present clear, audible and well defined. As a general rule of thumb recordings from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are nearly always better on the original vinyl. Remasters often fail to please as it’s just not possible to make a silk purse from a sows ear, i.e. the original recording lacks the necessary detail to be processed digitally and show an audible improvement. Indeed such processing can make the sound worse. Modern recordings which have been processed digitally from start to finish can be as good as vinyl. CD’s are often unfairly criticised for being poor quality. This is not the case, it is the original recording or the process which is to blame. Modern “remasters” can both enhance and degrade a recording. The statement GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) is the limiting factor. Ignore this at your cost. The results are fine musically but this is perhaps only for Barbieri admirers. Recorded in LA, Rio and Buenos Aires.
