Gastonia is named for William Gaston, member of the North Carolina Supreme Court. This Linen Era (1930-45) postcard shows a view of attendees at a watermelon feast, showing people seated at tables and watermelons on the ground, as well as what appears to be a group of nurses at the left, and hospital buildings in the background. The card's reverse informs "North Carolina Orthopedic Hospital, Gastonia, N. C., the only state-owned and state-maintained institution of its kind in the South, having a capacity of 160 beds with provision for crippled children of both races."
