Roughly 11 by 11 inches on a 12 by 16 inch sheet.This cartoon depicts a man in a bathrobe standing next to a police officer, looking up at a house that has an open window and a ladder leaning against it. A man carrying a bag runs off in the distance. The caption, in pencil, probably written by Williams, reads, "Goodness me! I could be sure I came down the stairs."The drawing is signed "Garth" at the left edge. Williams signed a second time, in full and in pencil at the bottom right corner.From 1943 to 1946 Williams was a staff illustrator at The New Yorker, but only seven of his drawings ever appeared in the magazine. But that short stint did lead to a connection with New Yorker writer E. B. White, who recommended Williams to illustrate his children's books, Stuart Little and Charlotte's Web. Williams' career as an illustrator of beloved children's books began with E. B. White and continued for decades.PROVENANCE: Williams (1912-1996) retired to Marfil, a small village outside of Guanajuato, Mexico.
