Description: *Absolutely beautiful, River Rock. *Measurements: Length approximately 2 inches Width approximately 2 1/4 inches Height approximately 1 1/4 inches Weight is 4.20 ounces *Where Rock was 'hounded' (found): Upstate Western New York Near the Adirondack mountains, Finger Lakes region. ***FUN FACTS*** The garnet, generally deep red in color, is New Yorks official gemstone. The largest garnet mine in the world, the Barton Mine, is located in the Adirondack Mountains. New York ranks 1st in garnet production in the US and 4th in the world. The main type of garnet found in upstate New York is the Barton garnet, which is the state's official gemstone: Barton garnet: A rare, ruby red garnet found only on Gore Mountain in the Adirondack Mountains. The Barton Mine on Gore Mountain is the world's largest garnet mine. Garnets can be identified by their hardness, crystal habit, and occurrence in metamorphic rock. They can appear in many colors, including deep red, pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, black, and colorless The garnets mined in New York are almandine garnets, the most common type, which are an iron aluminum silicate, and pyrope which are a magnesium aluminum silicate. Garnets can be found in a multitude of colors due to their differing chemical makeup, however, they are most commonly associated with a deep red color. A metapelite is a sedimentary rock that undergoes metamorphism. This sample is in the greenschist facies of metamorphism. The clays, which were included in the rocks change to chlorite, the chlorite to biotite (black micas on the rock) and the biotite change to garnet (almandin in this case). You can see a white outline around the garnet caused while absorbing the elements of the biotite. this level of metamorphism indicate a high level of pression and temperature between 450 and 500 celsius. Metapelite is a metamorphic rock that forms from fine-grained sedimentary rocks, such as mudstone or shale, that are rich in clay. Metapelites are known for their diverse mineral assemblages and microstructures, and are valuable for thermobarometry because their mineral compositions are sensitive to changes in pressure and temperature.
