Description: Here is a rare original illustration by Phil Bard (1911-1966) for the story titled, "Nice Girls With 5 Husbands", written by Fritz Leiber and published in Galaxy Science Fiction pulp magazine digest in April 1951. Bard was not your usual science fiction artists. This piece is one of a handful he did for the science fiction magazines. Bard started out working in the animation field during the 1930's working on Krazy Kat cartoons. He entered the comic field around 1941, freelancing for Fawcett and Fox Publications. At Fox he drew "Blue Beetle" stories and at Fawcett he worked on their Master Comics title drawing the adventures of "Minute Man", "Mr Scarlett", and later on the "Captain Midnight" and "Captain Marvel Jr" stories. He also moonlighted some work for National DC Comics where he provided art on the "Newsboy Legion" stories appearing in Star Spangled Comics between 1944 and 1946. At timely he drew a few "Captain America" stories. Not much is known about his career after leaving comics, other than during the early 1960's, a few years before his death, he was painting and exhibiting his work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Art is drawn with brush and ink on scratchboard with an image are measuring 12 1/2" x 20. There is a light crease in the lower right corner and some light soiling in the lower border area. There is also a small crumple on the top left corner which has been professionally repaired and the artwork has been mounted to an archival board. This was done by Roger Hill - Artist, Science Fiction historian and from whom I bought this piece. With matte it measures 14 1/2" x 22". I ship to USA only.
