Description: Please read the ad further down concerning the increased shipping charges. Seeds are sold individually. Please choose the number of seeds you want. The shipping remains the same price for whatever amount you choose. This listing is for Pennsylvania Paw Paw tree seeds. We also have Wild West Virginia paw paw seeds in a separate listing. If you prefer our WV Paw Paw seeds, please see our other listing. The WV ones taste like banana vanilla, while the PA ones taste of pineapple banana. We don't use pesticides and we don't have pest problems with either of our paw paw patches. If you'd like a mix of the two, we have a listing for that as well. For WV Paw Paw seeds https://www.ebay.com/itm/165693606762 For both PA & WV seeds & a discount for more seeds https://www.ebay.com/itm/165690518121 For Seedlings or Saplings (and seeds for no additional shipping) https://www.ebay.com/itm/166045491210 The seeds are priced each. If you want 10 seeds, you place a 10 in the box. While the package will be relatively light, the seeds will ship in moist peat and since it will be over 1/4" thick, the USPS requires it be shipped as a package. The lowest rate for a package shipped USPS for 2 oz, is $5.50. If you order a lot of seeds, the shipping cost will stay the same, so it's best to get all you need at one time. If you are out of the US, and use the global shipping program or a forwarder, please make sure customs won't seize your seeds. I don't ship seeds out of the US. Why shipping costs so much: Ebay has a program for certain packages that are less than .25" thick. Paw paw seeds are very large, and with the packaging, can be over that. If the seeds don't stay exactly side by side, they are definitely over 1/4". The rollers used to process the shipping envelope could crush the seeds, so they must be sent at the package rate. On rare occasions, the post office allows the package to be sent at the lower rate. If they do, then that is how it will be sent. Added 09-06-2024: Ebay Fees: Ebay currently charges 15% of every transaction, including shipping AND tax. This means if you buy one seed and pay $5.55 shipping and 6% tax, your total would be $6.94. Then Ebay takes $1.05, PLUS an additional 40¢ fee that is charged per transaction (NOT per seed - just every time you pay), then they forward the 40¢ taxes to your state. So, from that $6.94, Ebay deposits $5.10, and I still have pay for labels, envelopes, tape AND postage fees. You can see how I lose money selling only one seed (which many people purchase), so instead of raising the price per seed, I am adding the fees to the shipping cost. 15% of $5.55 shipping is 83¢, I can't know in advance the buyer's tax rate to consider percentage of fees, and I split the 40¢ fee. This adds $1.03 to each transaction, which I don't like, but it's better than adding it per seed. Without doing this, I would not be able to offer single seeds. 05-31-22 update Seeds are priced each, If you want more than 1 seed, you must change the number in the box before adding to cart. I've had many orders for 1 seed only, in the past, I have reached out to the buyer to make sure they want only one seed because as a gardener I know I usually don't take the chance of having only 1 seed planted, some people only want one, some people wanted more and made a mistake in ordering, some people didn't bother to read the description. Sometimes I send 2 seeds, but even that as a gardener seems not enough, without changing the entire structure of this ad, I am adding this paragraph in the hopes that more people will read what they're getting as I will now send what is ordered without following up before the order ships. How to plant your seeds: When you get seeds from Sam (that's the person behind these amazing seeds), you're getting seeds that were harvested in September 2024 from fresh fruit. Once the seeds are harvested and cleaned (a very messy job), they are kept moist and in the refrigerator. This begins their stratification. Seeds may have leftover organic material on them as seen in pictures. The seeds need 90 days of cold to grow. We keep ours in the refrigerator or plant them out in a cold frame. How you do it will depend on your climate and how much time you have. What you do with your seeds upon arrival will depend mostly on your climate. You can plant them as soon as the ground is workable. We prefer planting individually in pots or together in a tub that we cover with screens to keep the critters away. Please keep in mind that while you think your seed isn't growing, it sends it's taproot down before sending a sprout up. If you'll have cold temps, you can just plant in the ground where you'll want them to grow, or in pots outside or in a cold area and let nature stratify them. If you'll have warmer temps of lack time now, keep them in the refrigerator and keep them moist until planting time. When Sam starts a lot of seeds, he puts them in cone-tainers in the hoop house in February. These take up very little space and allow for long root growth. They can be a challenge to keep properly moist. We place them in the custom tray and put them in a large tote. Once the root peaks out the bottom and the top has grown, the seedling is then ready to be planted if the weather is right - and it usually is. If you order a bare root seedling, these are the ones we send. No matter what, do not let your seeds dry out. Dried out seeds will not grow. Dried out seeds are dead seeds. Leaving a seed sit out unprotected (not in it's moist peat or towel) for even an hour has been known to drop germination to 20%. When we started our paw paw journey years ago, we purchased a gallon size zip lock bag of seeds that was advertised as a pound of seeds through Ebay. I now know that that many seeds should have weighed about 5 pounds. They were light weight and very light in color. They were dried out. NOT ONE GREW, NOT ONE. That seller is still on ebay, still selling paw paw seeds, hopefully he has learned and no longer sells dried out seeds. The seeds Sam packs for you will be packed in moist peat and perlite. We do not ship seeds outside the US. If you want seedlings, we have some. Shipping for them is in fall or spring. They will be dormant and bare root. We don't use any pesticides, we grow organically. Paw Paw Information: Paw Paw , Asimina Triloba, is a native small understory tree or large shrub which typically grows 15-20' tall (sometimes to 30') and occurs in low bottom woods, wooded slopes, ravines and along streams. Often spreads by root suckers to form colonies or thickets. While the tree needs shade in it's 1st few years, it will thrive in full sun after that time. We recommend mulching the trees with wood chips, leaves or untreated mulch to avoid the soil drying out. When we want our trees in full sun, we place a normal sized plastic lawn chair over them when they're small for sun protection. We also wrap chicken wire around the legs of the chair to keep hungry critters from nibbling the bark or digging the seedlings up. Placing a brick on top of the chair will keep the shade cover from blowing away. You can, of course, make a shade house out of 1x2 lumber and landscape fabric. While this looks very nice, it tends to blow away easily. Pawpaws (Asimina triloba) often confused with papayas, is the largest native fruit in North America. It grows on trees, and is the only tropical fruit of the Annonaceae family that is able to grow in this part of the world. It’s ability to grow in forest areas makes it harvestable throughout North America, specifically from Southern Canada, to the Northern Florida, and every midwest state in between. The flavor of the pawpaw is described as very sweet, with flavors that are said to lie somewhere between bananas, pineapples, and pears. Typically, pawpaws are consumed raw, but they can also be included in breads, baked goods, & smoothies. They’re said to make a great substitute for mangos and bananas as well. Pawpaws have been recorded into history for centuries. In fact, it is rumored that U.S. president George Washington was a fan of the fruit, and that Lewis and Clark ate pawpaws during their expedition. During the great depression, pawpaws were called the “poor-mans banana”, since they were cheaper and more accessible than bananas during this rough time.
