ITEM(s) OVER 135 YEARS OLD!! François Pierre Guillaume Guizot, (1787-1874), was a French statesman and historian, who dominated the French government in the period before the Revolution of 1848. Born on October 4, 1787, in Nîmes, Guizot was educated in Geneva and Paris and became professor of modern history at the University of Paris in 1812. A moderate liberal, he lost his university post under the reactionary King Charles X and later played an active role in the king's overthrow during the Revolution of 1830. Under the new king, Louis Philippe, he served as minister of education (1832-37) and was responsible for a law mandating the establishment of primary schools in every French commune. As foreign minister (1840-47) he was the leading figure in a cabinet nominally headed by the former Napoleonic marshal Nicolas J. D. Soult. In foreign affairs, Guizot initially pursued a policy of cooperation with Great Britain, which ended in 1846 because of British opposition to a marriage between Louis Philippe's son and a Spanish princess. In domestic affairs, Guizot earned the hatred of the liberals because of his insistence on restricting suffrage to men of property, advising the poor to "get rich" if they wished to vote. Guizot replaced Soult as premier in 1847 during a time of economic hardship that further increased his unpopularity. His ban on opposition political meetings in January 1848 precipitated the revolution that ended Louis Philippe's reign the following month. After a year of exile in Belgium and England, Guizot returned to France, where he devoted the rest of his life to scholarly work. He died on September 12, 1874, at Val Richer.
