French Old Master Drawing after Saint Aubin: Catherine de Medicis in France

Description: Auction description French Old Master Drawing after Saint Aubin: Catherine de Medicis Arrives in France Here's an impressive, finely worked out historical drawing, in charcoal ink, and gouache highlights, on handmade chainlined paper. The subject is the arrival in 1533 in France of Catherine de Medicis to marry King Henry IV. The French expert René Millet says that this fine work derives from an original by Gabriel de Saint Aubin (1724-1780); so far, I have not succeeded in locating the original, but this drawing stands very well on its own. The queen-to-be Catherine is in the center, stepping off her Italian boat and surrounded by male attendants, including a Black dwarf, lower left. A young woman attendant, holding an umbrella, is seated lower right. In the background, a couple of other courtiers are conversing. I admit to some difficulty dating this drawing -- is it an eighteenth century original, or a nineteenth century artist's re-interpretation? The kind of paper, and the paper's apparent age, would indicate the former answer. In any case, I guarantee it as 130-140 years old at minimum. Immediate provenance is a recent fine arts auction at the Hotel Drouot, Paris. Dimensions are about 10.75 inches by 9 inches. The paper has toned, there is a little edge fraying at the top, a small repair at the bottom, and some old glue marks, verso. Condition is good for an old drawing on old paper; I find this work, so carefully realized, very appealing, and I am setting it out at a modest price point. Shipping within the U.S. will be $12.
