Description: Childs Navy Blue Transferware Miniature Toy Plate LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD LE PETIT CHAPERON ROUGE Gien Luneville, France c1900 This is stunning toy transferware plate, originally part of a complete miniature children's or doll's dinner service. It measures 4-1/2 inches in diameter, transfer printed in a deep navy blue. The plate resembles the transferware made in the Staffordshire region of England in the early to mid 19th century, but instead was made by Gien, one of the faienceries in the Luneville region of France. The plate is marked "Porcelaine Opaque de Gien" around a crown and castle. The plate is decorated with the risque French interpretation of the story of Little Red Riding Hood, as only the French could tell it. The source for the image was an illustration by Gustav Dore. Little Red is seen in bed with the wolf. Her clothes are strewn on a chair on the other side of the room, with her shoes tucked neatly under the bed. Little Red is stroking the face of the wolf, and she is saying Que vous avez de gdes. oreilles, which translates: "What big ears you have!" The plate displays perfectly and is in overall good condition but there is a stable tight hairline crack (impossible to capture in a photo) starting at 8 o’clock and migrating inward to the center. No other chips, cracks or repairs. Glaze skips and pooling and stilt marks along the edge original to the making consistent with age and typical of the period. Not fine pottery and not intended to be. Made for childs play and meant to be disposable. The little plate is a joy to behold. Price reflects condition. Sold as is, as described. This rare image is a fabulous little treat, simply irresistible in a miniature pocket size work of art to begin your LRRH collection.
