Description: Oil on canvas, 27" by 30" (33" by 36" as framed), the subject the roiling waves, a headland visible in the distance, signed at lower right and, I think, dated there "40", by well listed American artist and illustrator FREDERIC TELLANDER (1878-1977). This is a good-sized work, offered most definitely in as-is condition. It has suffered from the ravages of time and neglect, there being quite a few losses of paint, showing in photos are white areas, and there is craquelure, unstable areas, and just general grime as well. Clearly, the work needs the attention of a professional restorer. Tellander was born in Illinois, and studied art in Rome and Paris, the latter becoming one of his homes for much of his life. The artist received awards from the Art Institute of Chicago in the 1920's, and was a member of Chicago Painters and Sculptors. He was also an illustrator of note, and is especially remembered for his Studebaker ads in the 1940's, printed in many magazines and now collected by those who appreciate old advertising. At least one painting of a coastal scene is of Ogunquit, Maine, so I believe it quite possible that this could also be a Maine coastal. See the net for more on this artist. A recognized, high quality restoration company, from photos, estimated a full restoration to be in the $1800 to $2500 range.
