Description: FREDERIC S. COZZENS CHROMOLITHOGRAPH SHIPS: AMPHITRITE PURITAN MONTGOMERY ERICSSON: This chromolithograph is from our historic book, Our Navy, Its Growth and Achievement: American Publishing Company, 1892. The chromolithograph is approximately 7 ¾ inches by 12 ¼ inches. It has full margins. It has some age toning, dirt, and roughness around the edges of the border as seen in photos. When matted and framed, the toning and roughness of edges would not be seen. Otherwise, the piece is in very good condition for over 125 years old. On the back is an ink print of the picture which is 4 inches long and 2 ½ inches tall suitable for framing. Plastic sleeve included. Frederic S. Cozzens (1852-1928) is considered one of the best American 19th century marine illustrators. He is first known to have sketched marine scenes as early as 1868 and he contributed many illustrations to such publications as Harper’s Weekly, Daily Graphic, and Leslie’s Magazine. Known best for his depiction of yachting scenes, Cozzens drew all types of watercraft including naval images such as this one featuring Amphitrite, Puritan, Montgomery, and Ericsson ships. This is a nice example from his work illustrating the American Navy from the 19th century. The image shows identified ships on the high seas. The accurate and detailed illustrations of these ships make the illustration historically fascinating and attractive. Chromolithography is based on lithograph and the first method used for making multi-color print using separate stones or plates for separate colors or impressions.
