Description: FACE A 1. SALA MOLENDE (Work hard and you will be rewarded) 2. INAKA LOSELE (Let's all dance Losele) FACE B 1. NAKOKA (I am alright and comfortable the way I am) 2. NZAWE (Help me God) Tabu Frantal, who was born in Kisangani, Zaire, found early expression for his music during his primary school days in the school choir. He was drawn to the lyrical sound and melodious tones of the guitar, and by secondary school age, was playing well enough to perform professionally at night clubs in Zaire. He was always a consummate entertainer and as a lead guitarist, he performed and directed the creative efforts of Success Le Peu-ple in the late 1960s. In 1972, Frantal teamed up with Christopher Eshu and Shango Lola from Orchestre Revolution, to form Orchestre Boma Liwanza. Since then, his life has been a musical odessy throughout Central and East Africa, trading influences with other burgeoning musicians of the period as well as his many followers. He released his first single, "Mbanda Touby," in 1973. Since then, there have been many more singles and several albums accredited to him. Although based in Nairobi, Frantal's professional expeditions have taken him to such faraway places as Comoro Islands, Mauritius and Malagasy. When Orchestre Boma Liwanza dissolved in 1981, Frantal joined Orchestre Shikashika for two years, then temporarily halted live performances to record in the studio. In February of 1984, Tabu Frantal, Kanku Kashama "Kelly," Tony Bedgil, Tabu Ngongo, Nsilu Wa Bansilu, Mulamba, Kasule, and Botango Bedgil formed the original Vundumuna. Frantal has become a dynamic force in African music and this album represents the growth and maturity of his style. It offers a compelling mix of the contemporary, up-beat Zaire sound and the fascinating traditional folk rhythms of Central Africa. Guest vocalist Lessa Lassan, best known for his work in the 1960s and 1970s with the late Legendary Dr. Nico, adds lyrics (primarily in Lingala) that blend beautifully with the music of this outstanding and versatile group. This record possesses a very special quality - one that comes along rarely, and is certain to be widely imitated in the future. By Elizabeth Sobo
