Description: FRANKLIN PIERCE was the 14th President of the United States, serving from 1853 to 1857. During his term, he was involved with the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the Fugitive Salve Act. SIDNEY WEBSTER was Pierce’s private secretary. 3 pp, 5 x 7 ¾, ALS, Washington City, September 5, 1856, to New York political leader THURLOW WEED (1797-1882), a Whig and Republican politician and political adviser to William H. Seward. Weed was also instrumental in the presidential nominations of William Henry Harrison, Zachary Taylor and John C. Fremont. Webster writes a friendly letter to Weed mentioning Pierce’s schedule. “Your letter found me so much enfeebled in the eyes by use of remedies...that a reply at that time was not of my purview. I am so much recovered as to be able to leave here on Monday next, and to hope to be at the Astor House by Wednesday evening following. “The President [Pierce] has just left for a short trip to Warrenton Springs. He will return on Monday next.
