Description: BUT WHODUNNIT? READERS HAVE PONDERED THAT FOR 150 YEARS. THE APPEALING THING ABOUT THIS FAMOUS MURDER MYSTERY - something that has intrigued readers for 150 years - is that the murderer is never identified and you can choose the most likely culprit yourself. Was it John Jasper, opium addict, secretly in love with the victim's fiance, and choirmaster at Cloisterham Cathedral? It seems Jasper could have dunnit and the author Charles Dickens provided hints and insinuations that make it look very feasible. The problem is that when Dickens died in 1870 he had written only about half of the book. It had been published in serialized form (as many books were in those days) and only six of the 12 promised episodes appeared in print. The story was so well received that it was decided to go ahead with book publication anyway - and readers found themselves with a murder mystery that was a real mystery. Several writers have tried to take up the challenge and finish what Dickens left incomplete. That challenge has continued to this day and in 2015 a British newspaper asked the public to come up with a solution. There were some 15,000 responses and most felt that Jasper was, indeed, the killer. There were other possibilities, of course. THIS EDITION IS ONE OF THE FRANKLIN LIBRARY MYSTERY MASTERPIECE SERIES. The books in the series are valued not only because of their stories but because they are beautifully produced and make a most attractive appearance on a home bookshelf - either individually or as a set. They are generally not purchased for summer reading on the beach like an inexpensive paperback, but rather to be kept after reading and then displayed. This copy has clean and crisp pages, a tight, square binding and no sign of prior ownership. It is a keeper. Franklin issued 51 titles in the series including some of the most famous mystery thrillers ever written by authors such as Ira Levin, Michael Innes, Raymond Chandler, Frederick Forsyth, Eric Ambler - and, of course, the old maestros themselves Edgar Allan Poe and Wilkie Collins. THE FRANKLIN LIBRARY PUBLISHED THE MYSTERIES IN TWO VERSIONS - in full leather binding and in the less expensive faux leather binding. This copy is the more affordable faux leather version which does not include a sewn-in ribbon page-marker. But it is still a desirable book with a gilt design impressed on its front and rear covers with a front paste-on, the design extending to the spine which has five raised hubs. Printed on acid-free paper, the book has gilded page ends for protection and appearance. Illustrations are by Antony Maitland. This volume, like all others in the series, was published without a dust-jacket. This story has been adapted for film, television, radio and theater and in 1914 a light-hearted "trial" was held by well-known literary figures in London in which Jasper was accused of murdering Edwin Drood. It was all in fun and everyone present ended up being fined for contempt of court.
