Description: A fine White Mountain oil painting of Mount Washington & the Saco River at Hiram, Maine by American artist Frank Henry Shapleigh (1842-1906). Shapleigh was born in Boston, Massachusetts and after serving in the Civil War, he studied in Europe and then returned to New England, with studios in Boston and Jackson, New Hampshire, where he became very well known for his White Mountain landscape paintings. Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1888 lower left, signed and title inscribed by artist on verso “Mt. Washington & Saco River at Hiram, Maine” and housed in its original Arts & Crafts style carved giltwood frame, with some minor gilt loss.
