Founded in 1855 by the brothers Émile and Isaac Péreire under the name of Compagnie Générale Maritime, it was entrusted by the State with transporting mail to North America and took its final name in 1861. After a period of trial and error in the 19th century, the company, pushed by its presidents Jules Charles-Roux and John Dal Piaz, gained importance in the years 1910 to 1930, with prestigious liners such as the Paris, the Île-de-France and especially the Normandy. Weakened by the Second World War, it again gained importance in 1962 with the famous liner France, which suffered greatly from competition from air transport and was withdrawn from service in 1974. In the following years, the company merged with the Compagnie des Couriers Maritimes to form the Compagnie Générale Maritime, which later became the Compagnie Maritime d'Affrètement - Compagnie Générale Maritime (CMA - CGM). Contrary to what its name suggests, the Transat does not content itself with the operation of the North Atlantic line, and offers its travelers lines to Central America, and even, for a time, of the Pacific coast. From the beginning of the 20th century, it also offered crossings between Marseille and Algiers and created tourist circuits in North Africa in the 1920s. In the 1930s, the company briefly became involved in aviation through Air France Transatlantique. Finally, from the 1900s, it developed a cargo service which continued to grow, until it occupied a preponderant part of its activities. The steamers of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique were often symbolic works of art of their time, intended to represent the image of France abroad. Likewise, the quality of their service, in particular that of the meals and the wines, has won the loyalty of a wealthy clientele, in particular wealthy Americans during the time of Prohibition. Years after his death, his history and heritage continue to appeal to collectors and to be highlighted through exhibitions, such as those of the public establishment for cultural cooperation French Lines & Compagnies, which preserves the historical archives and funds company objects. From Wikipedia.
