Description: Auction description France 1940: A Rainy Day in Provence, Beautiful Watercolor by Tony Minartz (1873-1944) Antoine Guillaume (Tony) Minartz (1873-1944) achieved success in Paris in the early twentieth century via pictures of Paris cabaret life. But equally interesting, in my view, are the works he produced later in his career, after he returned to his native Provence. Some of these later works have come to auction in Paris, and I have been lucky enough to acquire several of them. This watercolor on paper, depicting a Provençal town under the autumn rain, is beautifully done and full of atmosphere. This is a 19th century boulevard, outside the medieval ramparts, and the leaves of the plane trees are changing color. On the left, a couple of pedestrians are walking under umbrellas. On the right, an antique automobile contrbutes to the sense of time and place. Dimensions here are about 12.5 inches by 15.5 inches. There is considerable paper toning and marginal dings all around. Condition otherwise is good overall. The cachet of the artist's atelier sale (Daguerre, May 2010) can be found lower right and on the back, and is a guarantee of authenticity. A watercolor by Minartz of somewhat larger dimensions sold for $667 at a 2013 French auction. Another sold at auction for $331 in 2013. I see a high water mark for a Minartz watercolor at a Christie's London auction in 2006: $ 8,856. This fine work, from the same skilled hand as the foregoing, and of estimable quality, is so modestly priced. Shipping will be $8 within the U.S. And to see what else I have for sale, please click here.
