Description: Framed NASA picture Jupiter's Gret Red Spot Despite its huge size, the giant planet Jupiter spins in less than ten hours, creating a distinct bulge around its equator. This rapid rotation generates enormous "coriolis" forces that deflect weather systems and cause them to wrap around the planet. The result is a series of alternating bands parallel to the equator - high-altitude, light-coloured "zones", with clearings between them (revealing darker-coloured, lower-level clouds) known as "belts". Jupiters most famous feature is a vast oval storm large enough to swallow the Earth, swirling anticlockwise at a latitude of about 22 degrees south of the Jovian equator. Known as the Great Red Spot or GRS, this storm has been observed for at least 180 years, and perhaps more than three centuries. Its colour can vary hugely over time and on occasion it can completely disappear (leaving a "hollow" in its place), but it always seems to regenerate itself, apparently by swallowing up other, smaller storms and absorbing their energy. The GRS is thought to be an enormous high-pressure area that dredges up material from deep within the planet, causing brightly coloured clouds to condense at high altitudes. It towers up to 8 kilometres (5 miles) above the surrounding clouds, and rotates once every six Earth days. Despite centuries of study, astronomers still arent sure what causes its colour - it may be due to phosphorous, sulphur compounds, or complex carbon-based organic molecules. STORMY WEATHER This Voyager 2 image, taken in July 1979, shows Jupiters southern hemisphere dominated by the Great Red Spot and a smaller white spot nearby. White spots are smaller storms at lower levels in Jupiters atmosphere, and have lifetimes ranging from months to years. This dramatic picture comes framed in a 30 x 24 cm, (12 x 10 inch) size clipframe. The picture offered does NOT have the "SAMPLE" watermark!!
