Description: Framed Antique Print ST MICHAEL'S MOUNT After Thomas Allom, 1804-1872 . Printed by W. Le Petit The landscape engraver William Alexander Le Petit (1804?-1896) was born at St. Pancras in London in or about 1804, the son of Joseph Le Petit and his wife Sarah Newstead, who had married in 1793. After his own marriage to Caroline Georgiana Ball (1809-1891) at Clerkenwell in 1834, he lived and worked in Paris for several years, exhibiting at the Paris Salon four of their dozen children being born there between 1836 and 1841.Working in London either side of these years, Le Petit was one of the most prolific engravers of his day producing steel engravings for all the major publishers and for most the major series of landscape engravings. He lived at various addresses in north London and spent the final years of his long life in well-earned retirement. He died at 46 Shakespeare Road, Hornsey, on 23rd February 1896 and probate of his estate was granted to his daughters Elise and Ellen. He is buried at Camden.
