Here is a large, gorgeous, Nautilus fossil from the late Jurassic from Morondava River Basin, Tulear Province, Madagascar. This was about 160 million years ago, with dinosaurs ruling the world. Species of the Nautilus is Cematoceras. Small spots of gap fill were used in a couple tiny areas, reflected in the price. It measures about 4.3 inches, and weighs 1 lb. 4.9 oz. The Nautilus was cut in half, to show the beautiful interior. Both sides were completely polished. Nautilus are related to, but are not ammonites. The siphuncle (siphon tube which regulates the water in the chambers, allowing it to go up or down) in an ammonite is along the edge of the shell. In a nautilus, the siphuncle goes right through the middle part of each chamber. It is easy to see the siphuncle in this specimen, note it is in the middle of each chamber, going through the septa (membranes separating the chambers). Another difference is that some Nautilus and other nautiloids still survive today. Ammonites were all wiped out at the end of the Cretaceous, with the meteorite that landed 66 million years ago ending many life forms.
