Description: This is a piece of limestone filled with fossils that once sat at the bottom of a salt water ocean in Michigan. These fossils date back to the Devonian period. This specimen shows some very fine details of the fossils in the limestone. There is hardly any wear or abrasion on the face of this piece. There is a large Stromatoporoid sea sponge in this specimen. Photos show top side which was washed by the waves in the water. The bottom side is not cleaned but may show as much detail as the top when cleaned. It is coated with limestone mud from where it was found. This is called a "hash plate" because it is a hash of the fallen organic materials on the bottom of the ocean that became fossilized. A hash plate is a mixture of many different plants and animals. This is also known as a "death plate" or "mortality plate" because it is a permanent snap shot of a mass of dead animals.
