During the war, while his father was overseas, his mother and LES had to move in with her parents. In a world in which the young men were away and the old men worked overtime, the women got together to play bridge and gossip and LES and his friend FOGG, two boys just pushing adolescence, found it fascinating to hide on the stairs and listen to talk which they both did and didn’t understand. They got a thorough indoctrination in who’s who, especially in respect to pretty KITTY LONER and her rich father, both quite unacceptable to the bridge brigade as nouveau riche and ‘upcountry.’ “When LES’s father came home and moved his family into a ranch-type home in a housing development, LES found himself outside this magic world of old Nashville and, try as he might, could never quite get inside it again. It was not until his father took him to a family reunion and he is upcountry kin that he was able to slough off the old standards and accept his heritage as a man and a McCOIN. “In one crammed, exciting day, he learned to appreciate the proud independence of his father’s people and played his part in KITTY’s whirlwind romance. “BOWEN INGRAM is the author of IF PASSION FLIES and is a frequent contributor to THE NEW YORKER. In this novel, she has used the medium of a boy’s conflicting loyalties to tell the romantic story of KITTY LONER and her love for a man who was not only a ‘foreigner’ to Nashville society but an engineer for her father’s pet hate, the TVA. “MRS. INGRAM writes with a light, sure touch about a society with which she is completely familiar. Born in Tennessee, she understands the tensions between the old and the new, caused by the gradual breakup of traditions and the changes brought by TVA.”—THE PUBLISHER • • For other details about this book, please see below. • TITLE: “LIGHT AS THE MORNING: A NOVEL” SUBTITLE: “The Country Club Set and Their Upcountry Kin” AUTHOR: BOWEN INGRAMCOVER ART: F.
