I am selling a very hard to find & quite possibly very RARE lithographed tin wind up Toonerville Trolley that I have dubbed the “Down Market Trolley.” I believe that H. Fischer of Nuremberg made this variation at the end of the production run of Toonervilles when the company was looking to produce a lower cost trolley for the domestic market as well as for export. The toy does not have the DRP or the DRGM numbers on the underside. I dubbed it the “Down Market Trolley” because Fischer cut production cost to the bone in order to be able to sell it at a much lower price point & still make a profit. Here are the significant changes that were made with each one saving a penny or maybe 2 pennies. (1) the electric take up pole at top was eliminated (2) the complex mechanism was changed to a simple barrel spring (3) which eliminated the need for a rod connecting mechanism to the skipper (4) changed the key wind from a more costly 2 part key with a wing top to a simple bent metal bar whose looped end could be grasped to wind up the toy (5) eliminated the tiller that the Skipper used to steer the trolley & put the Skipper on a spring so that his body moves with the motion of the trolley which replaced the complex mechanism that connected the eccentric wheels to the Skipper (6) reduced the amount of tin on the underside (7) eliminated the printing on the underside of the trolley in all 4 corners which had the patent information & registration numbers. It does have Made In Germany in a light red color against a dark red background which looks like an afterthought. The result of all these changes is a significantly lighter toy that sold for a lower price. Did this strategy work? Probably not. If it had resulted in a burst of new sales we would be finding more Down Market examples. As it is this is only the 3rd down market trolley I have seen in 45 years as opposed to the 100s of ordinary Toonerville Trolleys I have seen on eBay, at toy shows & at toy auction. The Down Market toy is in working condition & overall excellent. When wound the trolley moves forward with a bit of a wobble & the Skipper jiggles with the motion. The lithographed tin for the most part has bright, clean colors. The only “damage” of any note is a small spot of corrosion on the roof & near that spot is a black mark where some paint is missing. There is also some paint loss around the top of the right most arched window on 1 side. On that same side of the trolly the yellow panel that says copyright Fontaine Fox shows some spotting of the paint clearly visible in my closeup photo.
