Nicolaes Maes (January 1634 – 24 December 1693 (buried)) was a Dutch painter known for his genre scenes, portraits, religious compositions and the occasional still life. A pupil of Rembrandt in Amsterdam, he returned to work in his native city Dordrecht for 20 years. In the latter part of his career he returned to Amsterdam where he became the leading portrait painter of his time. Maes contributed to the development of genre painting in the Netherlands and was the most prominent portrait painter working in Amsterdam in the final three decennia of the 17th century. Oil on Canvas. Canvas dimensions: 56 x 46 cm (22.25 x 18 inches) (Continental canvas, sizing in centimeters). Condition report: There are some smaller abrasions along the inner frame edge where it makes contact with the canvas. The painting was cleaned and restored most likely early to mid 20th. century, at that time it was also relined. The painting is marvelously preserved and does not need any sort of service at this time Correct Dutch period frame in black with gold inset. Made of dark hard wood with hand made joints. (may be original to the painting, if not of an early similar period). The frame shows previous wear but has been refurbished and is free of any scratches or visible damage. Frame dimension: 73 x 62 cm, (28.75 x 24.5 inches). Provenance: The canvas stretcher indicates various numerical markings obtained as the painting has been sold at various auction houses over the years. Some stenciled number indicate major auction houses. There are at least 6 previous auctions indicated. Property of private Louisiana collector by 2017.Obtained by Frank & Son 2018.
