Description: Folio Society – THE SECOND JUNGLE BOOK (and) KIM [2 volumes] by Rudyard Kipling [1] THE SECOND JUNGLE BOOK (1996) - Illustrations by Edward Detmold recreated in colour by David EcclesThe Second Jungle Book begins with Baloo the Bear trying, like some patient housemaster, to din the Law of the Jungle into Mowgli’s inattentive ear. But it is only when the rains fail, when hunger strikes and Chil the Kite grows fat, when Shere Khan begins to get a taste for human flesh, that Mowgli is forced to learn.Five of the stories in the book are about Mowgli. In ‘The King’s Ankus’, which tells of treasure buried in a ruined city and guarded by a White Cobra, he learns about greed. In ‘Red Dog’ he pits his human wits against those of the dregs of the animal kingdom and wins a titanic battle, In ‘The Spring Running’ he grows up and leaves the wolf pack for the world of men. But it is Kipling’s evocation of the animal world which weaves the magic: Puran Baghat talking to the beasts in his cell like St Francis; the Mugger Crocodile on the banks of the river; Kaa the Python curled round Mowgli like an armchair.Kipling used to tell these tales to his children with the lights out, Then the jungle, with its passwords, its taboos, its scents, its screeches and its dangers, could come in… [2] KIM (1st Printing 1995) – Illustrations in colour by Auguste LerouxKim, ‘little friend of all the world’, a young orphan on the streets of India, finds his loyalties torn when he is caught up in the ‘Great Game’ of the Imperial Secret Service, and is divided between his Indian life and Anglo-Irish birth.
