Description: This specimen comes from the famous Horn Silver Mine in Beaver County, Utah. The specimen is 93x65x59 mm, with a mass of 308 g (weight: 10.8 oz). The main mineral of interest is sphalerite which fluoresces shades of very bright orange, grayish-orange, and pinkish-orange under longwave (365 nm) UV with terrific long lasting yellow-green phosphorescence. The sphalerite is very triboluminescent, producing sparks and flashes when scratched or scraped with a steel nail or other hard object. Under shortwave (254/255 nm) UV, the sphalerite fluoresces orange and hydrozincite on one side of the specimen fluoresces light sky blue. Fun fact - the original glow-in-the-dark paints and toys were made with copper-doped zinc sulfide, and glowed green. Horn Silver sphalerite with green phosphorescence is the same stuff, just in a natural form - crystalline zinc sulfide (sphalerite) with copper impurities!Note that you will need a filtered UV source of the proper wavelength (365 nm longwave) to enjoy this specimen.
