Description: Dugway GeodeDugway Geode Beds, Juab Co., Utah, USAFluorescent 35.8 grams5.3 x 4 x 1.5cm (2.12 x 1.57 x 0.59in) This is a well-formed polished chalcedony geode half from the famous Dugway Geode Beds in Utah. The chalcedony is pale blue with good banding in gray rhyolite matrix. It has a smaller second geode attached to the side of it. The chalcedony fluoresces bright green under shortwave UV light. The fluorescence is thought to be due to trace amounts of Uranium in the chalcedony. Fluorescence occurs in minerals when higher energy UV light hits the electrons within the mineral. Those electrons temporarily go into a higher energy state. As they return to their normal state they lose some energy in the form of visible light. The glow we see in a fluorescent mineral is the release of that visible light. About Me:My name is Krista Sawchuk, I am a recent PhD graduate in geochemistry.
