The Cat's Meow Club mascot, Casper, is enjoying the ride on this lovely penny-farthing from the 1870s-1880s. According to the Cat's Meow Collector's Catalog: "Ada Belle is named after my [Faline's] husband's grandmother, Ada Belle Shrimplin Jones. A storm started to brew as she was out for a Sunday afternoon ride. Now she is hurrying to get home before she gets drenched". As for the "penny-farthing", this was popular in the 1870s-1880s and was also known as the "high wheel", "high wheeler" or "ordinary" and was the first machine known as a bicycle. The large front wheel allowed for high speeds and comfort. According to lore, the name "penny-farthing" came from the British penny and farthing coins - with the penny being larger than the farthing so that from the side, it looks like a farthing following a penny. Never displayed. Smoke-free home and in storage for the last 20+ years. Most Cat's Meow pieces average 3-4" high x 5-7" wide x 3/4" thick; accessories average 2" high x 3" wide x 1/2" thick.
