Artist: Firmin-GirardCirca 1882Title: Animal farm visitorPaper Size: 24.5" x 17"Image Size: 22" x 14"Medium: PaperAbout this Piece: Charlieu is a small town in the department of the Loire. It was the hometown of the artist's wife, Sabine. Firmin-Girard moved to Paris in the early 1850s and attended the école des Beaux-Arts. By sixteen, he was also studying in the ateliers of Gleyre and Gérôme. He made his debut at the Salon in 1859 when the Jury accepted three works; a genre painting, a historical subject, and a painting entitled Saint Sebastien. Two years later, his Death of Priamus won him the second Prix de Rome, and he received a third-class medal in the Salon of 1863. On this occasion, his entry and medal-winner Après le ball was purchased by Princess Mathilde, which resulted in the painter securing valuable commissions and prestige. At the 1874 Salon, Firmin-Girard was awarded a second-class medal, and later, in 1896, he was decorated with the Légion d'honneur. Firmin-Girard drew his inspiration from the fashionable themes admired by the Haute Bourgeoisie. His canvases display his technical competence and facility with historical and genre subjects, as well as portraits, landscapes, and particularly flower paintings. Le Marché, Charlieu is a fine example of the artist's work and reveals an accomplished use of perspective and color.About the Artist: Firmin-Girard entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts at the tender age of 16 before continuing his studies at Gleyre's atelier. He made his debut at the Paris Salon at the age of 21, where his choice of exhibits showed him to be a talented young man yet to find a defining style. He had the distinction of having three paintings accepted, but they were unusually diverse: a genre scene; a historical work; and that perennial religious subject, a Saint Sebastian. Two years later, at the Salon of 1861, his classical painting, La Mort de Priamus, won the second Prix de Rome. Following this success two years later, his first major contemporary genre scene, Après le bal, was awarded a third-class medal. In many ways, an ambitious young artist like Firmin-Girard might have been disappointed not to receive a higher grade of medal. Still, the picture was purchased by Princesse Mathilde, probably the most influential collector in Paris at the time. The commissions flooded in and from his studio in the Boulevard Clichy; he produced a wide variety of subjects: portraits, landscapes, and still lifes but most of all, his elegant scenes from contemporary life. His paintings remained popular until well into this century, for though his subjects were those of literary art of the second half of the 19th century, his bright, clear palette shows an affinity with the Impressionists. Meanwhile, his distinctively short, almost stippled brush strokes produce surface textures quite unlike the smooth glossy surfaces of the diehard academics.
