We purchase and appraise estates, and are always buying collections. ITEM DESCRIPTION DescriptionUp for your consideration is a gorgeous, Imperial grade, Satsuma porcelain bowl, c. 1850 - 1870s. Importantly, the bowl is signed on the underside with Shimazu clan mon (in gosu blue), with some (faded) raised gold characters under that mark, and multiple other symbols and marks. The glazes used are gosu blue, coral, crimson red, and a near celadon green. The rest is painted, with extensive raised and flat gold highlights. It is work of the finest quality, and made for royality. The piece measure The color Gosu Blue is an on glaze enamel found on a type of Satsuma which used to be called Imperial Satsuma in mid to late 19 century. Gosu Blue is distinctive and very thick, that can be either dark blue, green or black depending on the firing. "Satsuma Gosu Blue" was produced in very limited quantity in Kyoto in the mid-19th century, and is now the most sought after of the Satsuma wares. Gosu blue is usually dense, and even when thinly applied one cannot see through it, and it does not get less dense when thin. This wares of this style of Imperial Satsuma mostly late Edo (c. 1850-70) period. SizeThe piece measures 8" square, and about 1.75" tall. It is heavy for its size. ConditionExcellent original condition, as described. There are no cracks, chips, or restorations. There is some crazing, commensurate with age.
