Tullidge served in the Union Army during the Civil War during which he was engaged in many major battles. In 1861 he enlisted for three years in the 8th Regiment, of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Tullidge was made a lieutenant and second in command of his company. In that role he saw action at major battles, including Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Kennesaw Mountain, and the siege of Atlanta. Eventually he was promoted to captain, and he returned from combat to start a liquor business in Cincinnati with another former soldier, William H. Richardson. Together in 1868 they founded a liquor business under the name Richardson & Tullidge. The partnership, although it encompassed three moves in Cincinnati, lasted only eight years. In 1876 Richardson departed and Tullidge renamed the firm Frank G. Tullidge & Co. and moved his firm to 35-39 Race Street, his address for the next eight years. Over time Tullidge’s company would move with some frequency -- to Vine St. for four years, West Fourth for eight, East Fifth for eight, East Third for two, and Main for one. F.G. Tullidge & Co. produced Pure Popcorn Whiskey in Cincinnati, Ohio. F.G. Tullidge & Co. also produced Old Windsor Whiskey (99.55 Proof). Tullidge also provided fancy giveaway items to his saloon customers where he displayed a large, framed picture of a lightly clad aristocratic damsel being attended to by a half-nude slave girl. It was styled to hang in a bar and bore his name at the bottom. A match safe was made specifically for this whiskey showcasing the company’s name and product. His liquor company disappeared from city directories in 1911.This is a quality, unusual, 3-dimensional Antique Gentleman's pocket container for matches, circa early 1900s, depicting a fishing net pattern at the top on both sides. This was a promotional item given to gentleman patrons who imbibed Old Windsor Whiskey. Almost all men of this period smoked, and this container held the wooden match sticks that could be struck on just about any surface to be lit. Obviously, these matches needed a secure metal container to carry them around. This match holder appears to be nickel plated steel. The slightly darker scattered spots are naturally occurring patina. Both sides have identical 3-dimensional embossed panels of a fishing net on the front and back top and bottom and 4 rope patterns top and bottom on both sides. Both the front and back halves have an unusual, slotted pattern crimped rim to secure the two half shells together, with a fancy ribbed match striking surface on all 4 sides. This advertising piece has 3-dimensional raised center panels on the front are “OLD WINDSOR WHISKEY, 99.55 PURE”, and “TRADEMARK, CRESENT MOON, G.G.TULLIDGE & CO., CINCINNATI, OHIO” on the backside. The inside has a metal sleeve with 4 rivets that holds the internal round spring. The inside top rim of the base has a metal lip held in place with 6 rivets that aligns perfectly the top with the base for a tight fit with a strong snap when closing. All of these characteristics are indicative of a high-quality, well-made piece. This piece was gifted to patrons that undoubtedly purchased a quantity of Old Windsor Whiskey at a liquor or retail establishment such as specialty dry goods store. This matchsafe remains in fine condition with a shiny appearance overall with expected surface scratches from pocket wear and a few naturally occurring spots of aging. Large size 3" tall x 1 1/2" wide x 1/2" thick, and hefty for its size weighing 1.2 oz. or 36 grams. This would be perfect for any Civil War, Whiskey, Old Windsor, Match safe, Tobacco, smalls display, desk accessory or paper weight; and could still be used today.
