Description: FIDEL CASTRO & Company, Inc. Communist Tyranny in Cuba Manuel Urrutia Lleó FREDERICK A. PRAEGER, Publisher New York • London 1964 This rare historical account has some definite signs of wear & age — foxing, the dust jacket shows wear, I found no tears or writing in the book, see photos for more insight on pre owned, vintage condition. Info from the dust jacket: The first President of Castro's Cuba tells his own story of the revolution betrayed his first meeting with Castro in the Sierra Maestra, his inauguration, and his stormy six months in office, culminating in his resignation and house arrest. A unique human document and an authoritative view of Cuba today. In November, 1957, Fidel Castro sent two emissaries to Manuel Urrutia, then a judge in Oriente Province. Their mission: to offer him the Provisional Presidency of Cuba once Batista was overthrown. In July, 1959, Dr. Urrutia resigned the Presidency of Cuba under Castro, and was placed under house arrest. This book is Dr. Urrutia's record of the events of the intervening months, during which he witnessed the repression of the press and of schools and colleges, the "purg-ing" of the judiciary, the transformation of labor unions into tools of state-run slavery. He relates how his conversations revealed the "Maximum Leader's" increasing distaste for democratic institutions, such as elections. At the same time, he chronicles the struggle he waged, together with a handful of dedicated democrats within the government, against the rebirth of tyranny under a Communist flag. Dr. Urrutia first tried to resign from office as early as February, 1959, one month after his inauguration. Twice again he resigned, only to be persuaded to remain for the good of the revolution. Finally, in July, after Dr. Urrutia had publicly denounced the growing menace of Communists in the government, Fidel Castro took to the television screens to attack the President before the nation. This time, Dr. Urrutia did not withdraw his resig-nation. More than a moving human document, more than a firsthand report on Cuban his-tory, FiDEL. Castro & COMPAnY, INc. is a valuable contribution to the study of Communist takeovers. For in tracing the entrenchment of Communist totalitarianism in Cuba, Dr. Urrutia employs the observations of Dilas, Trotsky, Lin Yutang, Victor Serge, and others to show that- in Cuba as in the Soviet Union- the application of Marxist doctrine has resulted in the establishment not of true socialism but of state capitalism, in the inevitable creation of a bureaucratic new class, and in a decline in quality and output through the collectivization of farms and factories. Ultimately, society as a whole is dehumanized and the worker turned into a slave. In a stirring conclusion, Dr. Urrutia argues that to oppose Communist principles the democracies of the world must adopt a new creed- Militant Democracy, based on the concept of the liberty and equality of all men- under which true revolutions may be carried out and human values may flourish. THE AUTHOR Manual Urrutia Lleó spent nearly thirty years as a lawyer and judge in Cuba before assuming the Presidency. After his resigna-tion, he remained under house arrest until April, 1961, when he obtained political asylum first in the Venezuelan Embassy and later in the Mexican Embassy in Havana. Since April, 1963, he has lived in the United States.
