Description: Three Federal Infantry Officer’s “Eagle” buttons excavated on the Spotsylvania Battlefield in Virginia. The “I” in the center of the shield denotes Infantry. Officer’s buttons during the Civil War had the branch of service in the shield. Theenlistedmen buttons had the plain shield with lines. The two smaller “cuff” buttons were worn on the sleeve. Most of the officer’s buttons were issued with a thin gold wash. Some of the wash is intact on these. The cuff at the top is called a “bachelor” button with a small ring for easy replacement. The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House was the second major battle in Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's 1864 Overland Campaign of the Civil War. Following the bloody but inconclusive Battle of the Wilderness, Grant's army disengaged from General Robert E. Lee's army and moved to the southeast. Elements of Lee's army beat the Union army to the critical crossroads of Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, and began entrenching. Fighting occurred on and off from May 8 through May 21, 1864. NOTE; the image of the Union Infantry Officer is a contemporary reprint of the original; courtesy of the Library of Congress. The artifacts come in a 5” x 6” riker mount box as shown. Take the pins out of the side of the case and lift off the lid to open. Copies of the paperwork shown will come with the certificate. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased.
