He came to be equated in literature with the Greek god Pan. Faunus was one of the oldest Roman deities, known as the di indigetes. Here he is depicted at the head of Bacchus, the wine god, identified by the grapes and vines. Faunus was an oracular deity. He was able to predict the future that was revealed to him in dreams or in supernatural voices coming from sacred groves. He was also considered a very good musician.Second engraving is a faun standing on one foot on a platform, dancing holding leather fans. A Fantastic Page with Engraving(s) from Thesauri regii electoralis Brandenburgici ... Antiquorum Numismatum et Gemmarum, quaeCimeliarchio Regio - Electorali Brandenburgico nuper accessere Rariora ut et Supellectilem Antiquariam..., Volume 3 Published by Coloniae Marchicae: Ulrichus Liebpert, (1696-1701) Illustrated by Laurentio Begero (Lorenz Beger), also known by the pseudonym Daphnaeus Arcuarius, Roman librarian, art historian and archaeologist (1653-1705) ~~~~~ Beger was the librarian of the coin, art and artifact collection of Frederick I, Elector of Brandenburg and King of Prussia. This catalog of the collection is considered one the first archeological texts and one of the most important works on classical art. Lorenz Beger dealt with the gems at the beginning of his work, which he arranged according to gods and heroes. The subsequent coins are divided into Greek kings, cities and heroes. The second volume contains the imperial and consular coins; in the third, Beger published coins and gems, statues and busts, but also objects such as lamps, vases, urns and sacrificial implements A stunning engraved page...nice detail...but with over 300 years of ageSize: Large, approximately 10" X 15" Condition: Excellent - Very Good - Good - Fair - Poor (but of historical interest) << Click Here to See Other Prints >> Important: P/H is combined on multiple items that can be mailed together. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
