Description: FARMERS FIRE of YORK The Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company was chartered by an act of the legislature of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on April 6, 1853. The business of the company was prescribed to be the insurance of the members' homes, barns and other buildings and their household and personal property against loss or damage by fire in the counties of York, Cumberland, Perry, Dauphin, Lebanon, and Lancaster. In 1854, the scope of the company's operations extended to the entire Commonwealth. In 1870, Farmers Fire began to write insurance in other states and in 1874, the word "Mutual" was dropped from the company name. Vintage Farmers Fire Insurance sign which is a variate of the one listed in “Signs of Insurance” book as number 126.1 on page 46. Brushed metal construction with black etched /lettering stating “Organized 1853 / The Farmers' Fire Insurance Co. / Of York, Pa.”, measuring approximately 12”X 18”. In average condition, with some scuffs/scraps and nicks/dings/dimples (mostly on the right side) from usage and age. The wear noted is not unusual and the dings aren't deep. The sign is straight and shows/displays well as seen in the pictures.
