Description: Original, vintage, framed Boydell Shakespeare Engraving – Second Part of King Henry the Fourth, Act II, Scene IV. Doll Tearsheet. Falstaff, Henry & Poins. published March 25th, 1795 by John & Josiah Boydell – when will thou leave fighting o’ days, and foining o’ nights, & begin to patch up thine old body for heaven. John Boydell (1719-1804), alderman for the City of London, publisher of books, illustrations and engravings. Boydell's The Shakespeare Gallery opened in 1789 in Pall Mall, and the first set of engravings based on the paintings was issued in 1791. Ten years later the nine-volume folio edition was published, and in 1803, Boydell printed the two-volume elephant folios of all the engravings based on the paintings in the gallery. King Henry the Fourth was painted by Henry Fuseli (1741-1825), engraved by Wm Leney (1769-1831) Printed on wove paper with full margins. The engraving is most likely from the 1808 publication. Framed in New York with authentic barn wood in the 1970s by one of the best framers in the city. Archivally matted. Frame: 30-1/2 x 24-1/2 inches; Mat opening that is the same as the Plate Mark: 22-1/4 x 16-1/2 inches; Image: 19-1/4 x 14-1/4 inches. Conditions: Excellent.
