Description: Grant Wood, born on February 13, 1891, in Anamosa, Iowa, was a seminal American painter best known for his work in the Regionalism movement. After his father’s death in 1901, Wood moved with his family to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where his artistic talents were nurtured. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and later in Europe, where he was influenced by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. However, it was the meticulous detail of Northern Renaissance art that profoundly impacted his style.Wood's most famous painting, "American Gothic" (1930), depicts a stern, farmer-like figure holding a pitchfork beside a woman, symbolizing rural American life. This iconic work brought him national recognition and became a symbol of American culture and the Great Depression era.Throughout his career, Wood emphasized the importance of American themes and landscapes, diverging from European modernism. He co-founded the Stone City Art Colony and taught at the University of Iowa, influencing a generation of artists. Despite his success, Wood faced criticism for his supposed regional limitations and struggled with personal challenges, including his concealed homosexuality in a conservative era.
