Something has been said (p. 56) about the individuality of the valley from which the river has just emerged and the sustained note of harmony struck at every turn between villages, hamlets, and houses, and the natural setting. This church could not have been more poetically placed to give the final touch. As a work of medieval art it is perhaps the most complete thing we possess with its full range of stained glass, carved stalls and screens, the painted figures of saints and angels on the walls (faint indeed but discernible), and the brass effigy of the man who rebuilt it as it stands in the last decade of the fifteenth century. The river is famous for its trout-fishing, well preserved below the town.
