Description: Jack Levine and James Michener; Facing East; New York, NY; 1970; first edition #1864 of 2500 Deluxe Limited Edition; Maecenas Press; poor condition - Incomplete Jack Levine (1915-2010) was an American Social Realist painter and printmaker best known for his satires on modern life, political corruption, and biblical narratives. Levine is considered one of the key artists of the Boston Expressionist movement. In 1970, Levine travelled in Japan and sketched his observations. This Portfolio contains some of those impressions in lithography, watercolors and stencils. Renowned author James Michener wrote the introduction and commentary to the art and tells the tales of these sketches. Facing East Deluxe Limited Edition Portfolio is hand SIGNED twice by both Jack Levine and James Michener in the colophon and on the inside of the clamshell box. This edition is a limited edition #1864 of 2500 numbered copies. In a while silk exterior clamshell box are two portfolios: one in a white silk portfolio with a leather band and a black leather portfolio. The white portfolio contains the lithograph and the 8 text folios. The text folio pages are crisp and clean with no markings, creases or tears. Text by James A. Michener; illustrated with original woodcuts by Jack Levine; printed on Arches paper; the original "hors-texte" woodcut is printed on Japanese vellum paper. In this incomplete set, only one of the four lithographs is present, printed on Rives paper, loose - as issued. The black portfolio contains the 54 watercolors gouaches and drawings printed in phototype and pochoir processes on Ingres paper, from 2 to 40 colors were hand-brushed on each. The edges of the outer clamshell and inner white silk portfolio have some fraying of the white silk along some edges. The edges of the black leather portfolio are curled. The watercolors and sketches have some curling and creases along the edges of the papers. Size: Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall.
