Description: This is a wonderful pair of signed Japanese Meiji period bronze vases conforming to a triple-gourd shape with elongated necks decorated in relief with birds and flowers. Each vase bears a long-tailed Japanese Phoenix or Ho-Oo bird on the middle gourd, representing the sun, justice, fidelity and obedience according to Japanese mythology. The flowers are Japanese peonies symbolising bravery, honour and good fortune. Some of the decoration is incised into the surface including the stylised clouds around the neck and the bamboo plants which dot the landscape towards the base. A pair of cartouches containing Japanese characters , possibly identifying the artist and/or foundry, have been cast into the bases. Dimensions: Height 30 cm; Diameter (max) 16 cmWeight: 2.91 kg each Condition: The vases are in fine antique condition with a lovely colour and patina. Though difficult to detect in most lights (and therefore difficult to photograph) there may be some faint bruising on the larger gourd of one of the vases.
