Using a combination of U.S. Dept. of Defense archive films, combat footage, and period newsreels of the time, each film features actual wartime footage and or first-person accounts from those that were there. This DVD focuses on the F-4 Phantom. The F-4 is a large fighter with a top speed of over Mach 2.2. It can carry more than 18,000 pounds (8,400 kg) of weapons on nine external hardpoints, including air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground missiles, and various bombs. The F-4, like other interceptors of its time, was designed without an internal cannon. Later models incorporated an M61 Vulcan rotary cannon. Beginning in 1959, it set 15 world records for in-flight performance, including an absolute speed record, and an absolute altitude record. During the Vietnam War, the F-4 was used extensively; it served as the principal air superiority fighter for both the Navy and Air Force, and became important in the ground-attack and aerial reconnaissance roles late in the war. The Phantom also has the distinction of being the last U.S. fighter flown to attain ace status in the 20th century. This DVD includes six films - THE RECORD BREAKING PHANTOM II This film presents the story of the F-4 Phantom, a tandem two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor and fighter-bomber originally developed for the United States Navy. Proving highly adaptable, it was also adopted by the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Air Force, and by the mid-1960s had become a major part of their respective air wings. The film begins with an overview of the F-4, including its ability to carry tremendous numbers of stores, an ability to operate from both WWII type aircraft carriers and super carriers. (12 min) - THE F-4 PHANTOM JOINS THE FLEET (1962) This McDonnell produced film “The Phantom Joins the Fleet” was made in 1962 when their F4H-1 (later F-4B) Phantom II had just achieved deployment. The film features Fighter Squadron SEVEN FOUR (VF-74) aka Bedevilers flying from the nearly-new aircraft carrier USS Forrestal (CVA-59). (23 min) - CONVENTIONAL WEAPONS DELIVERY This color educational/training film is about the dropping of ordnance from a US Air Force McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom jet. It is rather more technical than I expected and is a interesting watch. (28 min) - Any Target — Any Time A declassified U.S. Air Force film entitled “Any Target Any Time: Tactical Weapons Systems in Southeast Asia” and made during the closing years of the Vietnam War, this film explores the power of new aircraft and missiles during the war. (25 min) - F-4 PHANTOM FLIGHT CHARACTERISTICS Produced by McDonnell Douglas for the U.S. Navy, F-4 FLIGHT CHARACTERISTICS was a restricted film made for pilot training purposes. Included info on how to handle a flat spin. (30 min) - PRESSURE POINT This memorable U.S. Navy recruiting film entitled PRESSURE POINT was made in 1974 by John J. Hennessy Motion Pictures, with a script by Michael Ross. The film's point is that attention to detail, something beat into new recruits by a drill instructor, is absolutely critical for a U.S. Navy pilot.
