Using a combination of U.S. Dept. of Defense archive films, combat footage, and period newsreels of the time, each film features actual wartime footage and or first-person accounts from those that were there. This disc, The F-111 Aardvark DVD, is a collection of unique films about the General Dynamics' supersonic, medium-range tactical strike aircraft that also filled the roles of strategic bomber, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare in its various versions. Developed in the 1960s it first entered service in 1967 with the United States Air Force. The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) also ordered the type and began operating F-111Cs in 1973. The F-111 pioneered several technologies for production aircraft, including variable-sweep wings, afterburning turbofan engines, and automated terrain-following radar for low-level, high-speed flight. Its design influenced later variable-sweep wing aircraft, and some of its advanced features have since become commonplace. The F-111 suffered a variety of problems during initial development and several of its intended roles, such as an aircraft carrier-based naval interceptor with the F-111B, failed to materialize. USAF F-111 variants were retired in the 1990s, with the F-111Fs in 1996 and electronic warfare EF-111s in 1998. The five films on this DVD include : - The F-111 Tactical Fighter (1964) This now declassified briefing film showing key features of the then still-in-development F-111 was produced by the Air Force at Lookout Mountain Air Force Station, by the 1352nd Photographic Group. (9 min) - "BEYOND CHALLENGE" THE F-111 ALL WEATHER TACTICAL STRIKE AIRCRAFT This overview film on the capabilities of the night/all-weather fighter-bomber. Well produced and professionally filmed it is a great introduction to this special aircraft. (13 min) - F-111 AARDVARK SUPERSONIC WEAPON SYSTEM "ATTACK RADAR MISSION PROFILE" This late 1960s/early 1970s color training film (TF-6748) about the F-111 weapon system and F-111A attack radar mission profile was produced by the United States Air Force. (20 min) - FIRST FIVE DAYS OF WORLD WAR III - NATO vs. WARSAW PACT Produced in the 1980s at the peak of Cold War paranoia, this Grumman Aerospace film discusses the theoretical first five days of air combat that would occur in the event of an outbreak of hostilities between NATO and the Warsaw Pact. It emphasizes the EF-111A electronic warfare and penetrating aircraft's capabilities as part of the tactical package, performing jamming of Soviet radars. The film showcases the capabilities of the USAF and its high tech weapons and examines the Soviet threat. It features a great deal of footage taken from Soviet propaganda films from this era to show the Warsaw bloc's capabilities. (10 min) - F-111 AARDVARK FLIGHT TEST PROGRAM AIR-TO-AIR REFUELING This raw footage shows the General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark performing in-flight refueling, apparently as part of tests conducted at Edwards Air Force Base in California. The film shows the F-111 taking off, rendezvous with a tanker, and refueling approaches. It includes POV shots from inside the tanker aircraft as well as exterior footage shot by chase aircraft.
