Extremely Rare "The Red Book For Children" c. 1914/ Arthur Rackham, L.A. Govey

Description: For your consideration is an extremely rare children's book from the Red Book Seriespublished in the early 1900's. The author is Mrs. Herbert Strang which was thepseudonym of two prolific English authors; George Herbert Ely and Charles JamesL'strange. They worked with prolific illustrators of which this book is a great example.There is one Arthur Rackham plate dated '06 which was published in the artist'sedition of Peter Pan. L.A.Govey's illustrations cover at least two thirds of the book.There are other illustrations done by various artists also. All are charming such asthe ABC's for children done in the style of comics featuring gardening as a theme.I could find no other copy of this anywhere. It is signed in the front by owner anddated 1914. The printers were Richard Clay & Sons, Limited, London and Bungay. The bookwas published by Hodder & Stoughton, a British firm. Note that New York isprinted above their name. There were several books from the Red Book Series.This particular issue is not to be found. The book is in good condition being around 108 years old. The pages are notnumbered. There is wear to the covers and pages. A few of the colored illustrationshave become bent or partially torn at the bottom of the page near the spine.There are charming stories and rhymes throughout with gorgeous and veryimaginative illustrations to accompany them. The spine is loosening, but thebook is still intact with no loose pages. This is a valuable and historic pieceof children's work. Arthur Rackham's print is photo no. 7.
